Library Reading Room Renovation

Library open during 2009 renovation

After meticulous architectural research, the Society's rehabilitation project will restore the grandeur of the Library Reading Room. View larger photo.

The Library Reading Room at the Society headquarters in Madison is under construction to rehabilitate the space to its original 1900 grandeur.

Work began on June 21, 2009, and is projected to be finished at the end of January, 2010.

All library public services will continue to be available on the regular weekly schedule. All library collections will be accessible throughout the construction.

Before You Visit

Seating space in the Library Reading Room will be greatly limited. With most of the reading room closed, the number of chairs has shrunk from 75 to about a dozen. To help compensate, more seating has been made available on every publicly accessible stack level in the library. Please be aware that on most days the demand for electrical outlets also outstrips the supply.

If you are planning to bring a small group to research in our library in 2009, call 608-264-6535 to check on the status of the ongoing construction work before your visit. The library cannot accommodate large groups until 2010.
