About Our Wisconsin Local and County Histories

The Society has an extensive collection of local and county histories for Wisconsin, the United States and Canada, most from 1850-1920, with rich information on communities and prominent citizens.

There are histories for nearly all 72 Wisconsin counties. Most are several hundred pages long and include detailed accounts of individual cities, townships and villages, as well as biographical stories of prominent residents.

This is a two-volume history. The first volume is a local history, and the second volume consists of biographical sketches of residents of the county.


A history of Milwaukee County from the earliest historical times down to the present, including a genealogical and biographical record of representative families in Milwaukee.


Contains an account of Dane County's settlement, growth, development and resources, including city and town improvements, industries, manufactories, churches, schools, societies, its war record, and portraits of prominent men and early settlers.

Search the University of Wisconsin Library Catalog (formerly MadCat) for titles and call numbers. Then visit the library in Madison to consult the volumes you need.
  • Wisconsin Local History and Biography Articles
    contains 16,000 historical newspaper articles on notable Wisconsin people and communities. The entire collection is available digitally, displays the actual clipping and is downloadable. Most articles were published 1860-1940.
