Artillerymen prepare to leave their camp in Saidor, New Guinea (present day Papua New Guinea) on a patrol that would last several days. They were to search for enemy targets against which they would direct fire by their portable radio. Names (left to right) are Captain Earl Gantenbein of LaCrosse, Private Vernon Toutant of Chippewa Falls, Private Clifford Olin of Eau Claire and Sergeant Leslie Michaud, all from Wisconsin, Private Forrest Sappington of Southwest City, Missouri and Corporal Bill Reiter of Chippewa Falls, Wisconsin. They are wearing combat gear and carrying weapons and a radio.

This image was published in the Milwaukee Journal after February 3rd, 1944. The image and article appear on page 121 of the clipping book, Anybody Here From Wisconsin?, a reprint of the scrapbook kept by Robert Doyle's mother. Robert Doyle was a civilian war correspondent for the Milwaukee Journal during World War II, covering the experiences of Wisconsin troops in the 32nd "Red Arrow" Division, an infantry division of the United States Army National Guard. The "Red Arrow" Division consisted mainly of soldiers from Wisconsin and Michigan.
