The soldier's names are, (standing) Sergeant William Preston of San Francisco, California, (hatches, left to right) Corporal Nolan Burns of Milwaukee, Wisconsin, Corporal Earl MacDonald of Alphretta, Georgia, Corporal Harold Kling of St. Paul, Minnesota, (top, left to right) Private Wilber Janes of Des Moines, Iowa, Private First Class Ted Paulos of Vandergrift, Pennsylvania and Private Edward Johnson of Allentown, Pennsylvania. The tank has some art painted on the turret of a snarling black cat inside a star. Foliage is in the foreground and palm trees are in the background.

Robert Doyle was a civilian war correspondent for the Milwaukee Journal during World War II, covering the experiences of Wisconsin troops in the 32nd "Red Arrow" Division, an infantry division of the United States Army National Guard. The "Red Arrow" Division consisted mainly of soldiers from Wisconsin and Michigan.
