DESCRIPTION

Beehive tied down onto a roof, covered in snow. Stenciled on one of the hive boxes is the word: "JUMBO." Belongs to E.W. Brown, an apiculturist from Willow Springs, Illinois.

Caption reads: "Mr. Brown winters a colony on the roof of his house to study bee behavior with the entrance facing the northwest winds. The house stands on a hill elevating the hive 80 feet above the long stretch of land off to the northwest. The bees are frequently inspected with a pocket flashlight. During windy snow storms the entrance sometimes fills with snow but does no harm. Inspection reveals that the bees are peacefully clustered about 3 inches from the snow."
