Shopping Center at Sunset
The parking lot of a Piggly Wiggly grocery store (3557 E. Washington) looking northeast toward the corner of East Washington Avenue and Highway 51. Other businesses include the Serv-U-Beverage store, 3555 E. Washington Ave., the Suburban Corner Texaco gasoline station, 3594 E. Washington Ave. and a Lennox sign on another building. The Piggly Wiggly became the Casino Lanes bowling alley and then All Star Lanes. All Star closed in 2002. |

The availability of parking close to the stores was the key factor that drove business from the downtowns to suburban locations. Although the parking lots themselves were seldom attractive, photographer Paul Vanderbilt found something aesthetic in the scene. |
