Lincoln Beachey, shortly before his fatal crash at Panama Pacific Exposition in San Francisco in 1915. During his brief career Beachey was the best known, most daring exposition pilot. Beachey's success prompted other, less skillful pilots to attempt Beachey's stunts. Because so many pilots died attempting to emulate him, Beachey retired from flying in 1913. Apparently the lure of flying was irresistible and he returned to the exposition circuit. The plane in which he is sitting here is believed to be the new acrobatic plane in which he died.
