Stamped nonpareil mat. Brisbane was a doctor of divinity and of medicine, a slave holder turned abolitionist, a temperance leader, army chaplain, and Tax Commissioner of South Carolina. He was the first editor of the Southern Baptist, the American Citizen, The Philanthropist, and Crisis. Levi Coffin (1798-1877) was a prominent Quaker, who was born in North Carolina, and lived in Newport (Fountain City), Indiana for about 20 years before moving to Cincinnati in 1847. He and his wife, Catharine, were active in the Underground Railroad. |
