The Newhall House in the Main Street of Milwaukee

DESCRIPTION

The magnificent Newhall House, a hotel that dwarfed the neighboring buildings, opened in 1857. Hölzlhuber completed this sketch for the Neue illustrierte Zeitung in Vienna, which published it January 29, 1883. This was a few weeks after the hotel had completely burned down with a loss of over seventy lives. In the drawing are pedestrians and a horse-drawn carriage. A large American flag flies on top.
