During the 1830's and 40's, there was a lead mining town at this site founded by Col. Henry Gratiot and Capt. Jean P.B. Gratiot of St. Louis who came here in 1826 to open the lead "diggings." The post office was discontinued in 1846 and soon after, the site became a ghost town. The building in the photograph probably dates from the 1830's.
