DESCRIPTION

Senator Joseph R. McCarthy of Wisconsin congratulates Dwight Eisenhower after his nomination at the Republican Convention. Eisenhower is thought to have disliked McCarthy, in part because of his attack's on Eisenhower's friend and former commander George C. Marshall. On the campaign train to Wisconsin, Eisenhower subjected McCarthy to heated criticism. Nevertheless, Eisenhower was careful during the campaign not to offend McCarthy's admirers in public, and he removed a planned defense of General Marshall from a Wisconsin speech text.
