General Zwicker at Camp Kilmer
General Ralph Zwicker (center), commandant of Camp Kilmer and a native of Stoughton, Wisconsin. In 1954, General Zwicker became a central figure in Senator Joseph R. McCarthy's contest with the Army. Summoned to testify before McCarthy's committee (McCarthy was the only member present), on February 18, ostensibly to answer questions about an Army dentist alleged to have subversive connections, Zwicker was subjected to a humiliating cross examination. McCarthy charged that Zwicker was protecting Communists and that he was unfit to wear a uniform. This brought both Secretary of the Army Stevens and President Eisenhower to Zwicker's defense and set the stage for the Army-McCarthy Hearings. They inturn led to McCarthy's downfall. This undated photograph of Zwicker was taken at an Army Reserve unit party at Camp Kilmer.
