"The Regiment's bravest man - wounded five times in the battle at Pickett's Mill (New Hope Church)." He not only survived his wounds, but also at least 3 months in Andersonville Prison. In April 1867, Wisconsin Governor Lucius Fairchild honored Ole K. Hanson with a promotion to the rank of Brevet Captain: "In recognition of distinguished gallantry . . . though wounded five times he refused to leave the field and finally fell into the hands of the enemy he having advanced so far that it was impossible for his regiment to reach and save him." Ole died in 1882 in Nebraska, from injuries received when he fell under a wagon. |
