DESCRIPTION

Senator Joseph R. McCarthy with G. David Schine and Roy M. Cohn. Cohn recruited Schine as an unpaid consultant on McCarthy's staff in February, 1953. Several months later Schine was drafted, an event which eventually contributed to McCarthy's downfall when Cohn attempted — 44 times over an 8-month period according to one report — to get Schine a promotion and light duty. The report of Cohn's action had just become publicly known when this photograph was taken. McCarthy responded that Schine was being held hostage by the Army because of his investigations. The stage was set for hearings on Cohn's actions — hearings that would come to be known as the Army-McCarthy hearings.
