Thanks to the Republican victory in 1952, Senator Joseph R. McCarthy became chair of the Senate Permanent Investigating Subcommittee in 1953. In the next 18 months he made what had been a relatively minor body in a powerful weapon to identify and weed out Communists in the federal government. The youthful Roy Cohn had already made a reputation based on his involvement in the prosecution of the Rosenbergs.
