Wood County is thus named in honor of Joseph Wood, assemblyman from Grand Rapids when the county was formed. He came to Grand Rapids in 1848, and after serving one term in the legislature in 1856, and as county judge in 1857, was mayor of Grand Rapids from 1872 to 75.
