(Rep.): Born town of Lake, Tippecanoe, Wis., Jan. 5, 1910; married. Attended Wisconsin public schools; graduate Madison central high school. Veteran of World War II; served in army two and one-half years. Member of National Association of Secretaries of State. Appointed assistant secretary of state 1939; held that position approximately 15 years. Elected secretary of state since 1956.
