The 53rd Wisconsin Infantry was organized at Camp Randall in Madison during March and April 1865, at the very end of the war.

The regiment was ordered to St. Louis, Missouri, then to Fort Leavenworth, Kansas. It was transferred and incorporated into the 51st Wisconsin Infantry on June 10, 1865.

The regiment lost eight men during service, all from disease.
