| Additional Information: | Two 'site files' (Gov. Edward Scofield House and Main Street Historic District) exist for this property. They contain additional information such as correspondence, newspaper clippings, or historical information. The site files also contain documentation and correspondence relating to Memorandum of Agreement stipulations as well as Determination of Eligibility documentation. They are public records and may be viewed in person at the Wisconsin Historical Society, Division of Historic Preservation-Public History. Elaborate wraparound porch reconstructed in 2001. Schofield lived here from 1883-1925. Built about 1868 by William Brunquist, an early Oconto lumberman and general store owner, for $6,500. In the early 1870s, Edward Scofield married and acquired the house. Scofield ran the Scofield-Arnold Lumber Company headquartered in Marinette; in 1887, he was elected to the state senate, and in 1897, he began a two-year term as Wisconsin's last Civil War veteran governor. Later owners included Marion Scofield (Edward's granddaughter) who removed a large front porch, and Judge James Martineau. |
