Additional Information: | Photo code: Neg file 376/P3-17. The Andrew Jackson Turner House was home to a Wisconsin newspaperman and politician. His son, Frederick Jackson Turner, became the leading U.S. historian of his era; his essay, "The Significance of the Frontier in American History," won the Pulitzer Prize in 1893 and established the major direction for American historical scholarship for several decades. Like the Cochrane House, the Turner House changed over the years after it was built in 1881. Its Italianate origins are evident in the low-pitched hipped roof and segmentally-arched windows, but the residence later assumed a Southern-style Colonial Revival appearance, with the addition of a classical entry surround and a dramatic full-height Doric portico. |
