NOTES
Additional Information:ROUND ARCHED WINDOWS, SEGMENTAL ARCHED DOOR. AT THE TIME MANNING HAD THIS HOUSE BUILT HE ALSO PLATTED AN ADDITION BY THE RIVER AND PURCHASED A MILL. HIS FINANCIAL OBLIGATIONS OVERWHELMED HIM AND HE LOST IT ALL. HE THEN BECAME ACTIVE IN LOCAL POLITICS. E.S. GRISWOLD BOUGHT THE HOUSE FROM MANNING IN 1886. GRISWOLD WAS INSTRUMENTAL IN STARTING THE LOCAL LIBRARY. HIS WIFE, HATTIE TYNG, WAS A PUBLISHED POET. Built ca.1868 for Joseph S. Manning, proprietor of the Columbus Flouring Mills, this is one of the city's best Italianate style houses.

"This Italianate residence has unusually "clean" lines. Windows feature round arches which project slightly. The double-door entry is set beneath a segmental arch; the opening is tall enough to allow a transom window to be set above the doors. The facade is very orderly, with windows aligning on the first and second floors. A two story side wing is recessed slightly behind the main facade, a flared roof creates a porch in the recess. The building is covered by a compound hipped roof.

The house was built about 1868 by J.S. Manning who owned the local mill at that time. Manning was simultaneously purchasing the mill, platting an addition by the river and building this home. Unfortunately his financial obligations overwhelmed him, he lost it all and became active in local politics. E.S. Griswold purchased the building from Manning in 1886. He was a half brother to George and William. E.S. was instrumental in starting the local library. HIs wife, Hattie Tyng, was a published poet." Columbus Historic Architecture Tours, undated.
