It contains additional information such as correspondence, newspaper clippings, or historical information. It is a public record and may be viewed in person at the Wisconsin Historical Society, State Historic Preservation Office. Removed from the National Register on 5/12/2009. The two-story barn is 18' x 31' and is constructed of cobblestones of sizes varying from two inches to four inches. The smaller stones are generally found on the first story level and the larger stones at the second story level. Tooled limestone quoins 8" x 14" are laid at each corner of the building. The horizontal bands of cobblestone are laid in bands of v-shaped mortar. A portion of the south wall has been repaired by the present owner. Walls are 14" thick with a rubble core of small stone and a larger cobblestone veneer." The Carpenter-Douglas Barn at 910 Broad Street, built c. 1847, is the only known extant non-residential structure built of cobblestones in Rock County, and is architecturally significant as representing that unique form of construction. It was originally part of a complex of two cobblestone buildings, including a residence which stood at 918 Broad Street. This residence was torn down to make way for a recreational vehicle sales lot. Although the cobblestone barn, built c. 1847, is the only extant example of its type in Rock County, the original house with which it was connected, located on the adjacent lot, was torn down in 1973. The house at 910 Broad Street was built in 1905 by J.B. Dow, a realtor, lawyer, and insurance salesman. The only connection between the barn and the house, however, is that apparently the barn was already on the lot when Dow purchased the property. |
