SUMMARY
This six-block district includes 79 commercial and institutional buildings built mostly of cream brick between 1852 and 1938. A large majority of the two- and three-story buildings were designed in Italianate and Commercial Vernacular styles. There are also several examples of Neo-Classical Revival and Romanesque Revival style structures and two Prairie School design buildings, including the Farmers and Merchants Union Bank (1919), a National Historic Landmark designed by Louis Sullivan.
