Matt Jensen, a Danish immigrant, came to America in 1872. He started a successful butchering company in Waupaca. Although he sold the business in 1895, he remained a stock buyer and was able to live off of his investments. He and his wife Lena hired one of the best builders in town, Hans Knudson, to build their house in 1894. Knudson is known for his construction of the Fair Store building in downtown Waupaca.

The Jensen house design was probably taken from a plan book, a popular trend of the period. While it is a Queen Anne design it reflects the Stick and High Victorian Gothic styles. Their obvious influence is distinguished by the steeply pitched intersecting gable roof that is covered with scalloped shingles. The clapboard siding is decorated with stick work and there is an abundance of ornament. An interesting feature of the house is the repeated use of projecting balustrades which suggest a balconette. There is also a three story tower that serves as an entry pavilion.

The house is entered under a veranda and through raised panel and glass entrance doors. The glazing in the doors consists of etched and stained glass. This decorative glass is also seen in the large picture windows throughout the house. Fluted trim capped with bull¿s eye blocks decorates the interior. Other intricate details include the large turned posts at each end of the staircase. They topped with a knob and set on a square base. The stylistic qualities of the house demonstrate the craftsmanship of this local builder.
