SUMMARY
Wauwatosa Woman's Club Clubhouse
1626 Wauwatosa Avenue, Wauwatosa, Milwaukee County
Architect: Kirchoff & Rose
Date of construction: 1924-1925

Built by the well-known Milwaukee architectural firm of Kirchoff & Rose, the Wauwatosa Woman's Club Clubhouse is a fine example of the Georgian Revival style. The building is notable for its ornamentation, graceful classical proportions and fine detailing, including a classically-inspired portico.

The clubhouse includes club rooms, a board room, a large auditorium, as well as a museum housing built-in display cases featuring historical artifacts from Wauwatosa's pioneer period. This museum was a stipulation of mid-nineteenth-century Wauwatosa pioneer, Emerson Hoyt, who donated the land to the club.

The Wauwatosa Woman's Club first met in private homes upon its formation in 1893. Members were typically middle-class women married to local professional and business leaders. The original mission of the club was to advance the intellectual development of women. As the role of women in society began to change, this mission evolved to focus on community service as well. This included support for public schools, libraries, working with the poor and handicapped, and scholarships for post-high school education, which the club still maintains today. Since the building of the clubhouse, the club was able to house theatrical and musical events, and prominent lecturers. During this time, the club's community status and membership increased, boosting the club's importance as a social force in the city.

The Woman's Club continues to occupy the clubhouse.
