Patrick and Margaret Kinney House 424 N. Fillmore Street Lancaster, Grant County Construction Dates: 1951-3/1964 Architect: Frank Lloyd Wright The Kinney house occupies a large site overlooking farmlands to the west. It was built for Patrick Kinney, a successful Lancaster attorney, his wife, Margaret, and their growing family, in 1951-1953 from a design supplied by Frank Lloyd Wright. The Kinneys turned to Wright in large part because Margaret Kinney had experienced Wright's work firsthand at Taliesin. As a college student she worked as an assistant to Wright's sister, Jane Porter, when Porter was producing well-regarded amateur theatrical events in the Spring Green area. The one-story house is clad in local limestone, all of which Kinney quarried himself, and is based on a 60-120-degree equilateral parallelogram module having four-foot-long sides. The Kinneys' house originally had a hexagonal central core containing its living space, kitchen, utilities, master bedroom, and a bathroom, while a bedroom wing containing two bedrooms and a second bathroom extended at a 60-degree angle from the south side of the core. Nine years after completion, the arrival of a fourth child necessitated the construction of a second bedroom wing. In the remodeling, the original master bedroom became a new dining room. Taliesin Fellow John H. Howe, who had also supervised the construction of the original house, designed the new wing. The house remains in the possession of the Kinney family. The house is a private residence. Please respect the privacy of the owners.
