Marshall D. Miller Boathouse 7304 Campground Road, Town of Three Lakes, Oneida County Date of construction: c. 1920 The Miller Boathouse sits on the southern tip of a small peninsula in Laurel Lake, part of the Three Lakes Chain of Lakes in picturesque northern Wisconsin. Marshall D. Miller, a prominent member of the Chicago and NorthWestern Railroad Company, constructed the private boathouse c.1920 on the Three Lakes Rod and Gun Club property. Having been moved across the winter ice in 1949, the boathouse now sits opposite its original site, on the north shore of Laurel Lake. The Miller Boathouse is a two-story, wet boathouse with a front gable roof covered in asphalt shingles. The footprint of the boathouse is a simple square plan, and the structure rests on wood pilings. The frame of the building retains its original drop lap siding with corner boards, and exterior decoration of the boathouse is minimal. There are two boat slips enclosed by original sliding door panels on the south façade, and the second floor interior is a finished space intended for entertaining or as additional living and storage space. The boathouse is a good example of vernacular boathouse architecture, and serves as a reminder of seasonal recreation and lifestyles of 20th century northern Wisconsin. The building is a prominent feature on the shores of Laurel Lake, and has been recognizable to locals and tourists alike for nearly a century. The boathouse is private property and is not open to the public. Please respect the rights and privacy of the owners.
