SUMMARY
Citizens State Bank of Gillett
137 East Main St., Gillett, Oconto County
Date of construction: 1904

The Citizens State Bank of Gillett was built in 1904. This was the first building constructed for that sole purpose in the community and helped to meet the area's growing financial needs. The bank was Gillett's only financial institution until 1920. Ultimately, it was a casualty of the Depression and closed in 1932.

Banks such as these, located in Wisconsin's small cities and villages, reflect their community's growth and the expansion of local businesses. The bank also represented the maturity of the community, indicating that it could support the investment needed in a local financial institution.

After the bank closed in 1932, the building served other commercial purposes. It has been a grocery store, a clothing store, and a glove factory. The building currently houses a dental office. The building is used by a private business; please respect the rights and privacy of the building's occupants.
