SUMMARY
Omaha Hotel
317 W 7th Street, Neillsville, Clark County
Date of Construction – 1892

Because of the support and influence of the local logging industry, Neillsville was a large community with a substantial commercial area by 1880. However, community leaders realized that a time would arrive when the logging industry would wane. They also knew that for Neillsville to remain a thriving community a rail line needed to be built to the city. The rail line arrived in Neillsville in 1887; it offered the path to future prosperity and brought new businesses, including hotels and restaurants for the train traveler.

Ed and Peter Weber took advantage of that opportunity. The Webers purchased a lot that abutted the Chicago, St. Paul, Minnesota, & Omaha railroad and was less than one block from the Neillsville depot. On that lot they built a two-story brick hotel which had small guest rooms on the second floor, and a saloon and a dining room on the first floor. The Omaha Hotel was never intended to be a luxury hotel. It offered short-term lodging at a reasonable rate. It was built to serve the middle-income traveler, as well as the salesmen who traveled the country promoting and bringing new products to eager consumers.

The building's owners are rehabilitating the former hotel using the federal income tax credit program for commercial buildings.
