Goodrich, Ezra and Elizabeth, House
742 East Madison Avenue
Milton, Rock County, Wisconsin
Date of Construction: 1867
In 1867, Ezra Goodrich and his wife, Elizabeth, built this house as their family home in Milton. Like his father, Joseph Goodrich, who built the innovative grout-constructed Milton House, Ezra Goodrich designed his Italianate home with details that were different from other homes of this style in Milton. The house was designed with a rectangular form popular to the style, but lacked the typical roofline of bracketed cornice and frieze. Rather, Goodrich accented the cornice of his house with large oculus windows, a detail not seen anywhere else in the community. The interior of the house was also unusual, with a distinctive four-room plan that repeated on each of the three stories of the house, creating four large elegant family rooms and eight large bedrooms.
The unusual and very formal details of this house suited Ezra Goodrich, who was proud of his pioneer family heritage and who considered himself an important leader in the community. Even though he never served in a public office other than Town of Milton dog catcher, through his strong personality and wealthy status, he was able to have a significant impact on political decisions made in the community. Ezra Goodrich was a shrewd businessman with a cantankerous personality, and he fought for community projects that had a significant positive influence on Milton.
