SUMMARY
Teweles and Brandeis Grain Elevator
92 E Maple Street
Sturgeon Bay, Door County, Wisconsin
Date of Construction: 1901

The Teweles and Brandeis Grain Elevator, built in 1901, is a highly intact example of a grain processing and storage building, a type that was once common in Wisconsin communities. Teweles & Brandeis was an important and innovative company specializing in the wholesale marketing and distribution of agricultural products grown in Door County. This grain elevator became a regional delivery point for farmers, facilitating the distribution of their product, and a vital connection between farmers and consumers, and to the system of agricultural distribution prior to World War II.

In 1901 there were two other, similar, grain elevators but changes in the processing and manufacturing of agricultural products and changes to land use along the shoreline have resulted in the demolition of these other buildings once associated with these industries. The Teweles & Brandeis grain elevator is an intact and very good example of the building type, having an important connection to the history of agriculture in the region.
