Herman Uihlein House Whitefish Bay, Milwaukee County Architect: Kirchoff & Rose Date of Construction: 1918 Herman Uihlein, son of long-time Joseph Schiltz Brewing Company president Henry Uihlein, operated the very successful Lavine Gear Company. In the year he built his opulent Whitefish Bay residence, his company had amassed over one million dollars. Though located in a now populated suburban area, the Uihlein House sits at the back of a three-acre lot on a bluff overlooking Lake Michigan, giving it the feel of a remote estate. The limestone mansion is characterized by classical detailing, ornate craftsmanship, and a diverse interior design. Most striking is the impressive rounded entryway featuring immense columns, a front door adorned by an elaborate wrought iron grille and a sheltered second-floor balcony. The interior boasts a variety of period designs utilizing lavish materials. The prominent entry hall is dominated by a sweeping grand staircase with an ornate wrought iron railing. It also features a large elaborately carved sandstone fireplace, carved walnut doors and a coffered ceiling with decorative plasterwork. In addition to this residence, the architectural firm of Kirchoff & Rose designed many other Milwaukee landmarks. Extensive ornamental ironwork inside and out were created by famed ironwork master Cyril Colnik, whose work is seen at other Milwaukee residences. The Herman Uihlein House is a private residence; please respect the privacy of the owners. |
