Additional Information: | 2024: The two-story Early Gothic Revival style tavern building was constructed in 1897. The building stands at a triangular corner northwest of the intersection of E. National Avenue and S. Waters Street. It has a trapezoidal footprint and is constructed of loadbearing brick masonry walls. The three south elevations are angled with the entrance in the center. The east elevation is arranged into three bays with two windows in the first and second story of each bay. The west elevation is arranged into two bays, but it has been obscured by a one-story outdoor bar structure. The window and doors are accentuated by wide, shallow pointed arch brickwork indicative of the Early Gothic Revival style except in the northern most bay of the west elevation where the pointed arch has been removed and replaced with a lintel. The primary entrance, in the south corner of the building, and windows in the upper stories are placed in pointed arch openings that have since been filled with brick. The windows in the first story of the east elevation facing S. Water Street are in segmental arch window openings. The windows throughout have been replaced with rectangular one-over-one hung sash windows. The roofline features a corbelled cornice with bartizan-like crenellations above the primary entrance elevation. --- Aug. Witte was the builder. Excellent example of corner bar in nearly original condition. Unusual arches, excellent corbelled cornice. |
