Additional Information: | A 'site file' exists for this property. It contains additional information such as correspondence, newspaper clippings, or historical information. It is a public record and may be viewed in person at the Wisconsin Historical Society, Division of Historic Preservation. At least two beer caves--with an arched, brick ceiling and either brick or flagstone floors--remain extant beneath the earth and to the east of the brewery. It was suggested that this former brewery structure was erected in circe 1864 by John and Margaret Wittman, however, tax roll suggest it was built approximately ten years earlier-- between 1854 and 1855. Margaret ran the brewery for 16 years after her husband's death somewhere between 1876 and 1880. Her son ran the brewery then until 1893. It was later converted for residential use betuween 1904 and 1913. The structure is currently used as apartments/ flats. |
