Additional Information: | Two 'site files' exist for this property named 'Bayfield Fish Hatchery' and 'Bayfield Historic District'. They contain additional information such as correspondence, newspaper clippings, or historical information. They are public records and may be viewed in person at the Wisconsin Historical Society, State Historic Preservation Office. The S roll negatives are filed with the State Facilities Survey project. Another Map Code for this fish hatchery is 22/14. The Bayfield Fish Hatchery is a two and a half-story shingle styled building featuring a T-shaped plan configuration, a stone foundation, a cut stone exterior, a wood trim, and an asphalt shingled multi-gambrel roof. Brownstone appears on the first story and shingles appear on the upper stories. The porch was removed in the 1950s. (See Bib. Ref. C). The hatchery building is in very good condition and became listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1981. (See NRHP Nomination form for a complete description and statement). SIGNIFICANCE: Hatchery is significant architecturally and historically. DESCRIPTION OF COMPLEX: The Bayfield Fish Hatchery (50 04E-28) is located on Highway 13 2.5 miles southwest of the Village of Bayfield in Bayfield County. An 1897 fish hatchery and a 1940 frame spawning house are among the buildings included in the complex. The spawning house was originally a shelter over a raceway; it was remodeled for storage in 1963. This is another unique hatchery site, with a poured concrete show pool, which is in good condition. The hatchery building is in very good condition. "The original main building was constructed in 1897, on a site which originally included 502 acres of land, eight buildings, and 40 ponds. The Bayfield Fish Hatchery was placed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1981. Today the total hatchery site contains approximately 680 acres and includes several outbuildings (original and contemporary) and hatching ponds." (See Bib. Ref. C). "The National register lists only the original main building and is cited in areas of (1) Conservation/Industry, and (2) Architecture. The building is identified as "one of two architecturally distinguished hatcheries in the state." A summary of the nomination statement reads: "Located in northern Wisconsin's Bayfield County, the Bayfield Fish Hatchery is regionally significant for its role in propagation and control in the fishing industry of Lake Superior. As a prominent example of Queen Anne-Shingle Style design constructed in part of locally quarried brownstone, the building is locally significant as representative of both a type and period of construction." (Filipowicz and Matucheski 1981:3). (See Bib. Ref. C). Appearance unchanged in 2015. |
