NAER INVENTORY (08/1979): This building is a one and a half-story irregular-shaped brick structure with at least a partial gable and shed roof and at least a partial cement foundation. The facility has blass block windows and a brick chimney. This building was built in 1923 by Harry Benecke and was known as Benecke's Cheese Factory and for a time as the Fontenoy Cheese Factory. The plant was built on the site of another cheese factory which had been constructed about 1875 but later burned down. The new plant manufactured mostly cheddar cheese. It was closed in 1979. |
