The Larson Company Complex at 316-520 N. Broadway. NAER INVENTORY (Sept. 1979): This present complex is the culmination of several expansion projects undertaken by the Larsen Co. since 1908. The company has been located on this site since 1890. No original structure remains. The structure contains four building units, the earliest located toward the southern end of the site was constructed in 1908. This rectangular 130 x 101 3 story structure has been altered to the extent that very little of the original building fabric remains, save the foundation. Immediately north of this structure stands the old retort or kettle room. This structure was built in 1918 along with the 3-story packaging and storage building to the north (150 x 58). The large four-story warehouse building (103x 58), completing the ensemble, was constructed in 1923. The separate structures, while exhibiting differences in detail, are characterized by uniformity of structure and material. Reinforced concrete, brick curtain walls projecting pilasters and concrete lintels. 344-350 N. Broadway- As of 2006, second through fourth floor windows (12 each) have all been bricked up. First floor windows and loading dock bricked up. 316 N. Broadway- Metal clad fourth floor is a later addition. Original windows filled with glass block at a later date. |
