Additional Information: | This two-and-one-half-story, Queen Anne-inspired house rises from a stone foundation and features a hipped-roof central core with gabled projections extending to the west, north and south. Sheathed entirely with clapboard, the house also includes circa-1920s-30s, flat-roofed, enclosed porches with brick foundations along with what appears to be eight-light, casement windows along both its west and south elevations. Multiple-light, wood-frame windows are located within the home’s three gabled peaks, each of which also includes decorative scrollwork peak trim that appears to be modern. Windows throughout the remainder of the house are largely one-over-one-light sash examples. A 1976, flat-roofed, one-story garage extends from the rear of the house. Based on the home’s appearance, combined with an available 1893 plat map (upon which the subject house is not depicted), the house likely dates to the mid-to-late-1890s. The parcel in 1893 was owned by Theodore Kersten, who, along with his brother Henry, established the Germany Exchange Bank in Chilton. He was also a Democratic candidate for state treasurer in 1888 (Kersten’s brick house appears to remain further north, at 502 S. Madison Street and which coincides with the 1893 plat map depiction). No ownership information could be confirmed until the early 1960s, when the house was owned by Mark & Muriel Everix. Mark was born in 1914 and he and his family came to Chilton in 1920. His father purchased the Gustav Buhl bakery, which Mark and Muriel operated from 1943 to 1978. Muriel was involved with the Republican party and served positions on the State Executive Committee. The Everixes erected the attached garage in 1976. |
