Additional Information: | This one-story, Front-Gabled building was constructed 1937 in the hamlet of Marengo. The building is rectangular in plan with the principal elevation facing west toward STH 13. The gabled roof is clad in asphalt-shingling, and the exterior walls are clad in clapboard siding, with board and batten under the gable. A pent roof extends from the west gable end to the edges of the north and south roof planes. The pent roof shades a central entrance that is sheltered on either side with vertical board walls extending the full height of the front porch. Six-over-one, double-hung windows are located on either side of the entrance (paired to the north and singly to the south). A low picket fence encloses the porch area in front of either window. The property is certainly distinctive in Marengo and the broader project area as it appeared to be an early meeting place for the Marengo community based on the sheltered, central entrance in the gable end and the light or sign pole adjacent to the building. However, no information was found to suggest that the property holds significance as either an assembly hall or town hall. According to a Marengo resident, the property was most previously a tavern and subsequently a restaurant. |
