Additional Information: | There are eight buildings on the Nelson property. The main cabin ("Nelson cabin") was built by Olaf Edwards in the early 1930s (contributing). The Edwards cabin (also known as "Olaf's hired-man's shack", contributing), was built in 1910 on Stockton Island and was moved to Rocky Island in 1931. Additional contributing features on the property include a wood frame tool shed that was built by Olaf Edwards in the 1930s, a wooden storage shed, a dock, the remains of a net reel yard, and an old refrigerator that was used as a smokehouse. Two cabins located on the property are non-contributing. One is the Jones cabin; built by the Bayfield Fish Company in 1881 and was moved several times before ending up on Rocky Island in 1947. The other is the Nourse cabin; a sleeping cottage built by the Nourse family in the 1940s as a part of their "Rocky Island Air Haven" resort. The cabin was moved onto this property in 2001. Additional non-contributing features include a shower/sauna constructed by Julian Nelson in the 1980s, three privies, a staircase, and a large, ladder-like structure lying on the beach that is a boat launcher. Other records associated with this building include: Nelson Cabin (AHI # 148003), Nourse Cabin (AHI # 225426), Jones Cabin (AHI #225425), and auxiliary buildings (AHI #225427). |
