Additional Information: | A 'site file' exists for this property. It contains additional information such as correspondence, newspaper clippings, or historical information. It is a public record and may be viewed in person at the Wisconsin Historical Society, State Historic Preservation Office. 2012- "The Heyer Block is a two-story building with dark red brick facing on the main elevation and tan brick side and rear walls. In the upper level of the main elevation, there is a stone plaque that reads, "HEYER" It sits over three sets of paired single-light sashes with transoms. The storefront appears original and wraps around the south side of the building. It features a brick bulkhead supporting large show windows with a transom, a central recessed entrance with period entry door, and a period entry door on the north end of the storefront. Symmetrical fenestration of primarily single light sashes (a few with transoms) runs along the second story of the south elevation. The first story of the south elevation features several of these windows with transoms, a side entry with transom, and four transom size openings. This building was constructed between 1915 and 1919 for a long-time business in Darien, the Heyer Hardware Store. Jacob Heyer started the hardware business in the 19th century, and according to historic photos, had a frame building at this location. After Jacob Heyer's death, Henry J. Heyer, his son, took over the business and between 1915 and 1919, he erected this new building for that business. Heyer Hardware Store operated in this building during much of the twentieth century." -"Request for SHPO Comment and Consultation on a Federal Undertaking", Prepared by Carol Lohry Cartwright, Historic Resources Consultant, (2012). |
