Additional Information: | A 'site file' exists for this property. It contains additional information such as correspondence, newspaper clippings, or historical information. It is a public record and may be viewed in person at the Wisconsin Historical Society, State Historic Preservation Office. 2012- "The Darien Village Hall is a one-story brown brick building with details that suggest the Art Deco style. The building has a brick parapet that is raised over the main entrance and decorated with a plaque reading "Darien." A plain stone cornice defines the parapet. Five fluted pilasters decorate the main elevation. In between two of the pilasters south of the main entrance are two sets of paired multi-light openings. Originally the area north of the main entrance had two garage-type doors used for fire trucks. This area has been enclosed with bricks and a tripartite window has been set at the center. The recessed entrance is also a remodeling of the original double-door entry with transom. The first Darien Town Hall was built in 1870 and sat just north of this building. It burned in 1909, but was not rebuilt. In the federal government's most important work program of the Great Depression of the 1930s, the Works Progress Administration, Darien received funding for this modem hall in the fall of 1938. It was completed about a year later and housed the town office, public rest rooms, the fire department, the truck and grader for the highway department, and a public hall large enough for 300 people. It became a village hall in 1951 after Darien voted to officially incorporate. In recent years, the building has become deteriorated and village offices are now located in a neighboring building, while the fire department relocated to the edge of town in 1976." -"Request for SHPO Comment and Consultation on a Federal Undertaking", Prepared by Carol Lohry Cartwright, Historic Resources Consultant, (2012). |
