Additional Information: | A 'site file' exists for this property. It contains additional information such as correspondence, newspaper clippings, or historical information. It is a public record and may be viewed in person at the Wisconsin Historical Society, State Historic Preservation Office. 2012- "This two-part building features a two-story 1909 commercial building with a large one-story c.1940 addition. The two story building has a classical cornice and a facing of dark red brick on the main elevation. The side walls are cream brick. The building is accented by narrow pilasters and there are four openings in the second story. They have segmental brick arches and are covered with wood. The storefront of this building is in two sections. Historic photos show that the south section once had a large opening, but it is enclosed with wood. The north section had a storefront with show window and transom and an entrance where the current modern entry door is located. The storefront has been enclosed with wood and brick. The addition to the original building is one-story in height with a stepped parapet that decreases in height from south to north. Tile coping sits atop the parapet. The main elevation is faced with orange-red brick. A large entrance at the south end has been enclosed with a modem garage door. To the north is a remodeled small storefront with two openings and an entrance. The remainder of the main elevation features small multi-light industrial style windows in rectangular openings and a raised poured concrete foundation. The north side wall of the addition is faced with brick and includes several variously sized openings. Prior to 1909, this three-lot parcel was occupied by the old Darien Town Hall flanked by vacant lots. In 1909, the old town hall burned and E. C. Woodford acquired the southern-most lot to build an implement shop. The 1933 Sanborn Perris map show that north of the Woodford shop there was a small fire department shed and long, narrow, concrete block storage shed for town equipment. Some time in the mid-twentieth century, probably after the 1939 completion of the new town hall, these buildings were demolished and Woodford expanded his implement business into a new addition." -"Request for SHPO Comment and Consultation on a Federal Undertaking", Prepared by Carol Lohry Cartwright, Historic Resources Consultant, (2012). |
