Additional Information: | 2012- "This two story building has a painted brick exterior. On the main elevation, the second story paired windows sit under elliptical arches and are filled with modem replacement sashes. A historic photograph shows that there was once a bay projecting from the second story. A flat overhang divides the first and second stories. The first story has been remodeled. A large opening has been enclosed with wood paneling and a narrow window. The entrance has a transom, but is filled with a modem door. In 1914, Henry Rockwell constructed this building as the Elmo Theater. It had a stage and seating for 300 people. The bay window shown in historic photos may have been a projection booth that was extended out from the building. Initially, the theater featured both live entertainment and silent movies. In 1930, Rockwell died and the theater closed. The building was sold and remodeled into a standard first floor retail space with an upstairs apartment." -"Request for SHPO Comment and Consultation on a Federal Undertaking", Prepared by Carol Lohry Cartwright, Historic Resources Consultant, (2012). |
