Additional Information: | The newly inventoried property is a combined tobacco and dairy farmstead and consists of a house [227019], dairy barn [227020], tobacco barn [227021], tobacco stripping shed [227022], milk house [227023], chicken coop227024], corn crib [227025], silo [227026], privy [227027], and two sheds [227028 and 227029]. The house (AHI #227019) is a one and one-half-story Upright and Wing building built ca. 1890. Its primary facade faces northeast, with the single-story wing and screened-in porch extending to the northwest. A single-story shed roof addition is located on the southeast-facing elevation. The main entrance is located on a small concrete stoop on the northeast-facing elevation. The newer gabled addition is clad in vinyl siding while the remainder of the building is clad in vertical board and batten siding. The fenestration pattern is irregular and consists of replacement one-over-one doublehung windows. The roof is asphalt shingle, and the foundation material is not visible. The property also includes a summer kitchen and a second corn crib. However, tree limbs and wind have demolished the structures so that they no longer retain integrity. As a result, they were not included in the AHI. The property appears on the 1873 Atlas of Dane County, Wisconsin under the ownership of C. Ellingson. The buildings first appear on the 1890 Plat Book of Dane County, indicating they were constructed between 1873 and 1890. By 1899, the farm passed into the ownership of Norwegian farmer Christfor Offerdahl. It remained in the Offerdahl family through the early 1930s or 1940s, and had passed to the Sandven family by 1954. The property was also evaluated as a combined tobacco and dairy farm property type. The property retains a large number of intact dairying and tobacco-related outbuildings that effectively convey the property's combined agricultural use which was common among similar farms in Dane County. However, the farm house is a vernacular type with undistinguished architectural details. Moreover, it has undergone alterations which have greatly diminished its architectural integrity. The footprint has changed as a result of additions, the house has been re-sided, and it contains replacement windows. |
