Additional Information: | Single story front gable school on a rubble foundation. A small rear room with a half-hipped standing seam metal roof stands on a stone foundation. This rear room is original to the building and served as a storage area for wood, supplies and records, as well as a cloak and furnace room. Two windows flank the central gabled entry vestibule on the front (south) elevation. A cupola with a shallow-pitched pyramidal roof rises from the ridge of the main roof. The fenestration pattern is irregular, with four unevenly spaced window openings on the west elevation and two on the east elevation. A second entry is located on the east side of the rear addition, which is pieced by five small windows. This building, constructed in 1885, was the third school in Ball Prairie and could accommodate roughly 40 students. The school operated until 1958, when a consolidated district school opened at Winchester and the Ball Prairie School was sold at auction in April of the same year. The building is now used for storage. |
