Additional Information: | This two-and-one-half story American Foursquare House was constructed 1918 according to city assessor records. It is rectangular in plan featuring the distinctive box-like massing of the style with an asphalt-shingled hipped roof and red brick exterior cladding. The house is located at the southwest corner of Horicon and Oak Streets with its principal elevation facing east onto Oak Street. Prominent hipped roof dormers are centered in the east and north roof slopes with modern replacement windows extending the width of the dormers. The east facade contains two windows openings evenly set in the upper level atop concrete sills. Immediately below, the full-width porch exhibits a metal clad, hipped roof. The porch is supported on brick piers with concrete capitals and is partially enclosed with a filled brick porch railing. Below the porch, the entrance is offset to the north end of the elevation opposite a large picture window. The entrance is flanked by sidelights and is accessed via concrete stairs leading to the porch. The house is in fair condition and retains a moderate degree of integrity. The house retains the prominent dormers and full-width porch, which are indicative of the American Foursquare house; however, the majority of the original windows have been replaced signifcantly diminishing the integrity of the house Further, better examples of the American Foursquare house can be found in the City of Mayville such as the Charles Mann House at 357 N Main St (AHI #129564) and the Henry Steger House at 406 Main Street (AHI #129566). Accordingly, the house at 203 Oak Street is not recommended eligible. The property was not previously surveyed. A new inventory record was created for it. |
