Additional Information: | A 'site file' exists for this property. It contains additional information such as correspondence, newspaper clippings, or historical information. It is a public record and may be viewed in person at the Wisconsin Historical Society, State Historic Preservation Office. The Charles and Lydia Steinberg House is a 1 1/2 story Bungalow constructed circa 1930. The house is rectangular in plan with an asphalt-shingled side gable roof and cream brick exterior walls. The windows throughout are 4-over-1, double-hung windows set on concrete sills. The eaves widely overhang the house with exposed farter beams in the gables. A cream brick belt course runs along the foot of the entire house. The front elevation faces north onto Horicon Street with a large gabled roof dormer centered in the north roof plane breaking the slope of the roof. The dormer is clad in stucco and contains a bank of four windows. The front porch is sheltered under the extension of the north roof plane and is supported by squared cream bick piers and upper stucco walls. The porch is enclosed by a cream brick half wall topped with concrete and accessed via concrete steps with flanking cream brick walls and piers. The entrance is offset in the north elevation below the porch with paired windows unevenly set on either side. Significant Person, Charles Steinberg was a clerk in the Mayville Post Office, purchased the lot at 429 Horicon Street around 1925-the same year he was married to his wife, Lydia. However, no further information was found to suggest statewide or national significance to make the property eligible for listing. The Charles and Lydia Steinberg House was evaluated for listing in the NRHP as an example of a cream brick Bungalow in the City of Mayville, Dodge County, WI. The house is in good condition and retains a relatively high degree of integrity as the original brick exterior, windows and porches have been reatined It does appear that the underside of the eaves have been filled with vinyl cladding. Despite these alterations, the house exhibits the low, broad form and projecting eaves and gable ends characteristic of a Bungalow and displays features that indicate the influences of the Craftsman style on bungalows in the State of Wisconsin. Proposed adjacent project activities will reconstruct Horicon St (STH 28) in front of the property. City utility improvements and storm sewer construction will require additional trench excavation within the 66' right of way. The existing sidewalk and terrace will be reconstructed. As the project has the potential to impact the property's setting, a DOE is recommended. The property was not previously surveyed. A new inventory record was created for it. |
