Additional Information: | This two-and-one-half story American Foursquare house was constructed in 1918 according to city assessor records. It is rectangular in plan displaying the box-like massing characteristic of the style with an asphalt-shingled, hipped roof, stucco cladding in the second story and red brick at the first story. The principal elevation faces south onto Horicon Street featuring a central hipped roof dormer with a central bank of the three 3-over-1 windows. The windows throught the first and second levels are 4-over-1, double-hung windows. Two sets of paired windows are evenly set just below the eave in the second story of the south facade. Below, a hipped roof porch spans nearly the entire principal elevation with squared stucco columns and a solid porch railing of the same material. The entrance is offset to the west end of the south elevation and is flanked by sidelights. A bank of three windows is offset to the east end of the same elevation. The house is in fair condition and retains a fairly high degree of integrity. It retains the prominent dormers and front porch, which are indicative of the American Foursquare house as well as the original windows. Despite the retention of these features, better examples of the American Foursquare house can be found in the City of Mayville such as the Charles Mann House at 357 N Main St (AHI# 129566), both of which exhibit more elaborate front porches-one of the essential components of the American Foursquare House. According, the house at 418 Horicon Street is not recommended eligible. The property was not previously surveyed. A new inventory record was created for it. |
