Additional Information: | The two-and-one-half story Queen Anne House was constructed 1885 according to city assessor records. It is rectangular in plan featuring an asphalt-shingled gable roof, patterned shingling in the gable and brick exterior. The house is located at the northwest corner of Horicon and Walnut Streets. The south facade contains paired 1-over-1 windows in the gable, which is closed with a pent roof. The windows in the first and second story are set in segmental arched window surrounds. Two are evenly set at either end of the south elevation in the second story. Below, a full-width porch shades two large picture windows with transoms as well as the entrance. The porch is supported on 4 x 4 posts with a balustrade of turned woodwork. A two story bay is located at the south end of the east elevation-facing Walnut Street-as well as a porch of the same construction with an upper veranda. The house is in good condition with a moderate degree of integrity. The original windows throughout the house have been replaced, and based on the posts supporting the porches, the original porches have likewise been replaced or reconstructed. Further, as a Queen Anne house, 121 S. Walnut Street is lacking the characteristic complex roof form and irregular massing that is indicative of the style as well as a steeply pitched roof, wall projections or greater variety of surface textures. In the City of Mayville, the houses at 215 N. German Street (AHI #15258) and 303 S. School Street are excellent examples of the elaborate and varied details of the Queen Anne Style. In comparison, the house at 121 S. Walnut Street is not a good example of the Queen Anne style in the City of Mayville. The property was not previously surveyed. A new inventory record was created for it. |
